THE WINDOM SCHOOL BOARD HELD A REGULAR MEETING THIS WEEK.    A NEW 3-YEAR LEASE WAS APPROVED WITH APPLE FOR I-PADS AND LAPTOP COMPUTERS.  THE LEASE CAME IN UNDER BUDGET BY 14-THOUSAND-DOLLARS A YEAR.  THE BOARD APPROVED A PRELIMINARY BUDGET FOR THE 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR.   THEY APPROVED A RE-STATEMENT OF THE DISTRICT’S EMPLOYEE RETIREMENT SAVINGS PLAN, TO CONFORM WITH I-R-S REGULATIONS. A PLAN WAS APPROVED TO USE AN INSURANCE REBATE.  A CHANGE WAS APPROVED IN THE INSURANCE PLAN FOR VISION COVERAGE. 
 
THIS IS SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK IN MINNESOTA.   TODAY’S TOPIC COVERS TORNADOES.  A REMINDER – THE STATE-WIDE TORNADO DRILL HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO THE WINTER STORM.  LAST YEAR, THERE WERE 57 CONFIRMED TORNADOES IN MINNESOTA.  THERE WERE NO FATALITIES, BUT ONE INJURY WAS REPORTED.  TORNADOES CAUSED ROUGHLY $9-MILLION IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, AND $500-THOUSAND IN CROP DAMAGE.  LOCALLY, A TORNADO WAS REPORTED LAST JULY 19TH NEAR CEYLON IN MARTIN COUNTY.  ANOTHER TORNADO WAS REPORTED ON SEPTEMBER 20TH NEAR GRANADA IN MARTIN COUNTY.   
 
WEATHER PERMITTING, THE MT LAKE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL WILL HOLD ITS ANNUAL BENEFIT AUCTION ON FRIDAY AT THE SCHOOL BUILDING, AT 710-11TH STREET NORTH IN MT LAKE.    DOORS WILL OPEN AT 5:00PM FOR BROWSING OF THE AUCTION ITEMS.  BIDS WILL BE TAKEN ON A SILENT AUCTION FOR GIFT BASKETS.  THE LIVE AUCTION WILL BEGIN AT 6:30.  CONCESSIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE.  PROCEEDS GO TO SUPORT THE MT LAKE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, INCLUDING ITS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.  THE LIVE AUCTION WILL FEATURE A WIDE VARIETY OF ITEMS, PRODUCTS AND SERVICES, INCLUDING HAND-MADE ITEMS.  A FULLER LISTING IS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB SITE AT gomlc.org.    
 
THE WINDOM CITY PLANNING COMMISSION MET THIS WEEK.   A PUBLIC HEARING WAS HELD ON A ZONING APPLICATION.   THE COMMISSION VOTED TO RECOMMEND THAT THE WINDOM CITY COUNCIL APPROVE A CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT FOR THE GUARDIAN INN PROPERTY.  THE COMMISSION ALSO VOTED TO RECOMMEND THAT THE COUNCIL APPROVE A PLANNED UNIT DEVELOPMENT FOR THE SITE.  THE PLAN CALLS FOR THE MOTEL ROOMS TO BE RENOVATED INTO 1-BEDROOM APARTMENTS.   THE PLANNING COMMISSION ALSO APPROVED AN AMENDMENT TO THE PUBLIC NUISANCE ORDINANCE, TO TRY AND DEAL WITH PROPERTIES THAT HAVE MULTIPLE VIOLATIONS. 
    
THE WINDOM SCHOOL BOARD HELD A REGULAR MEETING THIS WEEK.   A NUMBER OF PERSONNEL ITEMS WERE HANDLED, INCLUDING ACCEPTING A RESIGNATION FROM AG TEACHER DARCY DAHNA.  BETSY HARWOOD WAS HIRED AS A FULL-TIME AG TEACHER.  DONATIONS WERE ACCEPTED, INCLUDING $552 FROM THE WINDOM UNITED DRIVE FOR THE IMAGINATION LIBRARY.  THE SUPERINTENDENT HAD AN UPDATE ON STAFFING FOR NEXT YEAR.  THE BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE HAD AN UPDATE ON THE BUILDING PROJECT.  THE OFFICIAL GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY WILL BE HELD EARLY IN MAY.
