Local News Headlines – Thursday, July 11th

THE DES MOINES VALLEY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AGENCY WILL HOLD A BOARD MEETING AT 9:00 THIS MORNING IN THE CONFERENCE ROOM AT THE LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER IN WINDOM.    THERE WILL BE A PRESENTATION FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN MENTAL HEALTH CENTER.  THE BOARD WILL REVIEW A RECOMMENDATION INVOLVING CLIENTS WHO ARE ON MEDICAL ASSISTANCE AND MINNESOTA CARE.  A NUMBER OF ITEMS WILL BE DECLARED AS SURPLUS PROPERTY.   
 
THE BUSINESS, ARTS AND RECREATION CENTER IS OPENING A NEW ART EXHIBIT IN THE LIBRARY GALLERY.  AN OPENING RECEPTION WILL BE HELD FROM 4:00 TO 6:00 THURSDAY AFTERNOON IN THE GALLERY.  THE NEW SHOW FEATURES THE WORK OF LOCAL ARTIST APRIL HENDERSON.   HER WORK USES CANVAS AND PANELS.   THE PAINT IS POURED ONTO THE SURFACE AND FINISHED WITH A HAND TORCH.  THE RECEPTION AND EXHIBIT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.  LIGHT REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED. 
 
THE 2019 MURRAY COUNTY DRAFT HORSE SHOW WILL BE HELD THIS WEEK AT THE MURRAY COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS IN SLAYTON.   EVENTS WILL BEGIN ON FRIDAY WITH JUNIOR CART AND JUNIOR TEAM SHOW CLASSES.   ON SATURDAY, THERE WILL BE OLD-TIME FARMING DEMONSTRATIONS.  THE SHOW BEGINS AT 2:00PM.  ON SUNDAY, GATES OPEN AT 9:00 AND THE SHOW BEGINS AT 12:30.  ALONG WITH TEAM JUDGING, THERE WILL BE HANDS-ON DEMONSTRATIONS, FOOD BOOTHS, SOUVENIRS AND MORE.   
 
THE 14TH ANNUAL JEFFERS OUTLAW DAYS CELEBRATION WILL BE HELD THIS WEEK.   ON FRIDAY THERE WILL BE A 5-K FUN RUN AND WALK.  THE JEFFERS FIRE DEPARTMENT STREET DANCE WILL HAVE MUSIC WITH ‘HICKTOWN MAFIA.’  ON SATURDAY, THERE WILL BE A PANCAKE FEED, VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT, KID’S FUN DAY IN THE PARK, BEAN-BAG TOURNAMENT, COMMUNITY SUPPER, AND A STREET DANCE WITH MUSIC BY ‘RED DIRT ROAD.’   
 
THE 2019 RHYTHM OF THE RIVER MUSIC FESTIVAL IS BEING HELD THIS WEEK IN JACKSON.   THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL WILL TAKE PLACE AT FORT BELMONT FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.  THERE WILL BE MAIN-STAGE ENTERTAINMENT WITH COUNTRY, BLUES, BLUEGRASS AND AMERICANA.  THERE WILL BE A ‘TADPOLE’ STAGE WITH CHILDRENS ENTERTAINMENT AND KID’S ACTIVITIES.  VENDORS WILL HAVE FOOD, BEVERAGES, ARTS AND CRAFTS.   
 
COMFREY WILL HOLD ITS ‘COMMUNITY DAYS’ EVENT THIS WEEK.    EVENTS TODAY WILL INCLUDE THE LIONS CLUB SUPPER AND ICE-CREAM SOCIAL.  THE LITTLE MISS COMFREY PAGEANT WILL BE HELD, FOLLOWED BY A VARIETY SHOW.  THE TWILIGHT ROAD RACE BEGINS WITH REGISTRATION AT 7:00PM.   COMMUNITY DAYS WILL CONTINUE WITH MORE EVENTS FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.   
 
THE WORTHINGTON INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL IS BEING HELD THIS WEEK.   THE FESTIVAL IS A CELEBRATION OF DIVERSITY IN SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA.  IT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.  ACTIVITIES WILL TAKE PLACE AROUND THE NOBLES COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER.  TODAY, THERE WILL BE A PROGRAM CALLED “JOURNEY TO AMERICA” IN THE FARMERS’ ROOM AT THE GOVERNMENT CENTER.    THERE WILL BE FOOD SAMPLES, MUSICAL PERFORMANCES, AND RECENT IMMIGRANTS WILL TELL THEIR STORY OF COMING TO AMERICA.                                                           
 
THE JEFFERS CITY COUNCIL HELD A REGULAR MEETING IN LATE JUNE.   THE COUNCIL MET WITH THE COTTONWOOD COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO DISCUSS EXTENDING A SEWER LINE TO THE COUNTY HIGHWAY SHOP.  THE COUNCIL AGREED TO WORK ON PLANS FOR EXTENDING THE SEWER LINE.   INFORMATION WAS PRESENTED ON OPTIONS FOR RE-FINANCING AN OLDER BOND ISSUE.  THE CITY COULD POTENTIALLY SAVE UP TO 37-THOUSAND-DOLLARS THROUGH LOWER INTEREST RATES.   
 
A BOARD MEETING WAS HELD THIS WEEK FOR THE WINDOM ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY.   THE E-D-A AND THE PLANNING COMMISSION WILL BE REVIEWING THE FORMAL SITE PLAN FOR THE NEW APARTMENT BUILDING.  THE PLAN CALLS FOR A 45-UNIT BUILDING.  PLANS ARE BEING DEVELOPED TO FORM A GROUP THAT WILL DISCUSS ISSUES WITH CHILD CARE.  THERE WAS AN UPDATE ON THE CEMSTONE REDEVELOPMENT AREA.   THE E-D-A WENT INTO CLOSED SESSION FOR LAND NEGOTIATIONS.
