Local News Headlines – Tuesday, July 9th

A NUMBER OF LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS ARE RECEIVING FUNDING THROUGH FEDERATED R-E-A AND OPERATION ROUND-UP.  IN THE LAST ROUND OF GRANTS, JUST OVER 29-THOUSAND-DOLLARS WAS AWARDED TO 36 NON-PROFIT GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS.  GRANTS INCLUDED $1,000 TO THE OKABENA FIRE DEPARTMENT; $1,000 TO THE JACKSON COUNTY CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT; $900 TO THE JACKSON COUNTY LIBRARY; $750 TO REINBOWS, INCORPORATED OF WINDOM; $500 TO THE HERON LAKE-OKABENA SCHOOL DISTRICT; $500 TO THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY; $300 TO BIG BUDDIES OF JACKSON COUNTY; AND $250 TO THE LAKEFIELD GIRL SCOUTS. 
 
THE WINDOM CITY PLANNING COMMISSION MEETS AT 7:00 THIS EVENING AT THE CITY HALL COUNCIL CHAMBERS.    THE COMMISSION WILL CONSIDER A ZONING RECOMMENDATION INVOLVING THE PROPOSED ANNEXATION OF PROPERTY INTO THE CITY LIMITS.  THE WINDOM CITY COUNCIL HAS VOTED TO ACCEPT A PETITION OF ANNEXATION FOR PROPERTY ON HIGHWAY 71 NORTH – THE PROPOSED SITE OF THE NEW AVERA MEDICAL CLINIC.  THE COMMISSION NEEDS TO MAKE A RECOMMENDATION ON HOW THE PARCEL SHOULD BE ZONED.   
 
THE HERON LAKE CITY COUNCIL MEETS AT 7:00 THIS EVENING AT THE CITY HALL COUNCIL CHAMBERS.   A ZONING PERMIT APPLICATION WILL BE REVIEWED.  THE JACKSON COUNTY ASSESSOR’S OFFICE WILL HAVE A REPORT ON TAX-FORFEITED PROPERTIES.  THE COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER A CHANGE IN THE CITY ORDINANCE DEALING WITH WELLS. THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT WILL REPORT ON STREET MAINTENANCE AND STORM WATER ISSUES.  THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL HAVE ITS MONTHLY REPORT.  THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL REPORT ON A ‘FEMA’ GRANT. 
     
THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HELD A REGULAR MEETING LAST WEEK.   THE BOARD REVIEWED AN APPLICATION FROM MINNESOTA ENERGY RESOURCES FOR A CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT.  THE COMPANY IS SEEKING TO CONSTRUCT A BORDER STATION IN SECTION 30 OF EWINGTON TOWNSHIP.  A CONTRACT WAS APPROVED WITH THE JACKSON COUNTY D-A-C FOR CUSTODIAL SERVICES AT COUNTY PARKS.  CONTRACTS WERE AWARDED FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECTS.  THE BOARD SCHEDULED A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN. 
 
AN AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE WILL BE HELD IN WINDOM ON WEDNESDAY.   BLOOD DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE WINDOM COMMUNITY CENTER FROM 1:30 TO 6:30.  BLOOD DONORS WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE COUPONS FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES, AND MAY REGISTER FOR A CHANCE TO WIN DOOR PRIZES.  LIGHT REFRESHMENTS WILL BE AVAILABLE.  ALL BLOOD TYPES ARE NEEDED.  BLOOD DONORS SHOULD WEIGH AT LEAST 110 POUNDS AND BE IN GOOD GENERAL HEALTH.  YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW IDENTIFICATION AT CHECK-IN.  BLOOD DRIVES WILL BE HELD IN WORTHINGTON ON THURSDAY AND MADELIA ON FRIDAY.
