Tornado Confirmed in Windom

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS CONFIRMED THAT A WEAK TORNADO DID TOUCH DOWN BRIEFLY IN WINDOM ON SATURDAY. 
 
THE TORNADO IS BEING DESIGNATED AS AN “EF 0” – THE LOWEST RATING ON THE TORNADO INTENSITY SCALE.   
 
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MADE THE DESIGNATION BASED ON EVIDENCE THAT WAS SUBMITTED BY THE COTTONWOOD COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR, INCLUDING PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEO OF THE DAMAGE.   THE WEATHER SERVICE WILL NOT BE COMING TO WINDOM TO DO AN IN-PERSON INSPECTION. 
 
THE STORM HIT AT ABOUT 6:15 SATURDAY EVENING.   THE PATH OF THE STORM INCLUDED COTTONWOOD LAKE, 15TH STREET AND THE COTTONWOOD COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS.  
 
MOST OF THE DAMAGE REPORTS INVOLVED TREE LIMBS AND BRANCHES.  A CAMPER TIPPED OVER, AND THE WINDOM POP-CAN BIN TIPPED ON ITS SIDE. 
 
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TOOK PLACE AT THE FAIRGROUNDS, WITH DAMAGE REPORTED TO SIX DIFFERENT BUILDINGS.  ACCORDING TO THE COTTONWOOD COUNTY FAIR BOARD, ROUGHLY HALF THE ROOF CAME OFF THE CHILDREN’S BARNYARD BUILDING.  OTHER BUILDINGS HAD DOORS BLOWN OFF AND MINOR ROOF DAMAGE.  THERE WAS ALSO POSSIBLE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE HOG BARN.   THE CITY BUILDING OFFICIAL WAS BEING CALLED TO INSPECT THE HOG BARN TO SEE IF IT IS SAFE FOR USE FOR THIS WEEK’S COUNTY FAIR.  IF THE BUILDING IS NOT AVAILABLE, OTHER PROVISIONS WILL BE MADE FOR THOSE EVENTS.   
 
THE FAIR BOARD ASSURED THE PUBLIC THAT THE COTTONWOOD COUNTY FAIR WILL BE HELD AS SCHEDULED.
