THE WINDOM SCHOOL BOARD HELD A REGULAR MEETING THIS WEEK.   ENROLLMENT IS UP TO 1,086 STUDENTS IN K-12.  KINDERGARTEN, 3RD GRADE AND 7TH GRADE ARE THE LARGEST CLASSES.  THE BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE HAD AN UPDATE ON THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING PROJECT.  THE BOARD HANDLED A NUMBER OF PERSONNEL ITEMS DURING THE CONSENT AGENDA.  A NUMBER OF DONATIONS TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WERE ACCEPTED, INCLUDING $1,650 FOR THE ROBOTICS PROGRAM.  THE BOARD APPROVED FUND-RAISING ACTIVITIES FOR THE F-F-A PROGRAM. 
                                         
THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MET LAST WEEK.   THE BOARD REVIEWED AND APPROVED HEALTH INSURANCE RATES FOR 2020 THROUGH BLUE CROSS/BLUE SHIELD.  PREMIUMS WILL INCREASE BY ROUGHLY 9.5%.  A SEPTIC SYSTEM LOAN WAS APPROVED.  THE BOARD APPROVED A REDUCTION IN THE LEASE PAYMENTS FOR DES MOINES VALLEY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES.  AN OPENING WAS POSTED FOR A HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR TO PROVIDE SEASONAL SNOW REMOVAL SERVICES.  A CHARITABLE GAMBLING PERMIT WAS APPROVED FOR THE JACKSON RACING HALL OF FAME. 
 
HOMECOMING WEEK CONTINUES AT HERON LAKE-OKABENA HIGH SCHOOL.   CORONATION WAS HELD MONDAY; KAILEE HABERMAN WAS CROWNED HOMECOMING QUEEN AND DYLAN JOHANNING AS KING.  TODAY’S DRESS-UP THEME IS WILDCAT AND COYOTE SPIRIT DAY.  THE HOMECOMING PARADE WILL BE HELD AT 1:00 THIS AFTERNOON, FOLLOWED BY A PEP FEST.  THE CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM WILL RUN THE GAME BALL TO THE FOOTBALL FIELD.  THE FOOTBALL GAME TONIGHT HAS H-L-O/F FACING CEDAR MOUNTAIN.  THERE WILL BE A DANCE AFTER THE GAME.       
 
A TEACHER FROM WESTBROOK-WALNUT GROVE HIGH SCHOOL HAS WON A STATE-WIDE AWARD.   PAT MERRICK WAS CHOSEN AS ONE OF THE 2019 “EDUCATORS OF EXCELLENCE” BY THE MINNESOTA RURAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION.  MERRICK WILL RECEIVE HIS AWARD DURING THE M-R-E-A ANNUAL BANQUET IN NOVEMBER.   MERRICK IS A HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER.  HE WORKS TO DEVELOP NEW SCIENCE CLASSES, APPLIES FOR FUNDING FOR PROJECTS, AND ORGANIZES COMMUNITY PROJECTS.   MERRICK ALSO COACHES BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL.   
 
THE 45TH ANNUAL HERITAGE FAIR IS BEING HELD AT THE HERITAGE VILLAGE IN MT LAKE THIS SATURDAY FROM 10:00 TO 3:00.  ADMISSION IS FREE; DONATIONS ARE ACCEPTED.  THERE WILL BE A CAR SHOW; LIVE MUSIC; A SPELLING BEE AND A CHILDREN’S PARADE.  A VARIETY OF FOOD ITEMS WILL BE AVAILABLE.  OTHER ATTRACTIONS INCLUDE A BAKE SALE, GIFTS AND SOUVENIRS, A DISPLAY OF OLD YEARBOOKS AND OLD HOSPITAL RECORDS.  THE HERITAGE VILLAGE WILL BE EXHBITS AND DISPLAYS IN 19 BUILDINGS.  MORE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON FACEBOOK. 
 
REINBOWS, INCORPORATED IN WINDOM IS HOSTING ITS 9TH ANNUAL KID’S RODEO AND FALL FESTIVAL ON SATURDAY FROM 10:30 UNTIL 4:00PM.  GATES OPEN AT 10:30.  THERE WILL BE A HORSE-RIDING EXHIBITION AT 11:00.  KID’S RODEO EVENTS WILL BE HELD FROM 1:00 TO 3:00, WITH TROPHIES AND PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS.  PUMPKIN CHUNKIN WILL BE HELD AT 3:00, WITH THE GRAND FINALE AT 4:00.  THERE WILL BE PONY RIDES AND CARNIVAL GAMES.  CONCESSIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE WITH PIZZA, BURGERS, BRATS, POPCORN AND ICE CREAM.
