THIS IS WINTER HAZARD AWARENESS WEEK IN MINNESOTA.   TODAY’S TOPIC IS WINTER FIRE SAFETY.  MOST HOME FIRES TAKE PLACE IN THE WINTER; JANUARY IS THE MOST COMMON MONTH FOR FIRES IN THE HOME.  ALL HOMES SHOULD HAVE WORKING SMOKE DETECTORS.   KITCHEN AND COOKING ACCIDENTS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF HOME FIRES.  OTHER POTENTIAL CAUSES OF HOME FIRES INCLUDE WOOD-BURNING STOVES AND FIREPLACES AND SPACE HEATERS.  HAVE YOUR CHIMNEY CHECKED FOR CRACKS OR CREOSOTE BUILDUP.  IF YOU USE A SPACE HEATER, KEEP IT AWAY FROM DRAPES OR BEDDING.  TURN OFF SPACE HEATERS AT BEDTIME OR WHEN LEAVING THE HOME. 
 
THE HERON LAKE CITY COUNCIL MEETS AT 7:00 THIS EVENING AT THE CITY HALL COUNCIL CHAMBERS.    A PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD ON SPECIAL ASSESSMENTS.  THERE WILL BE A PRESENTATION BY THE “BLUE HERON DAYS” COMMITTEE.  A ZONING PERMIT APPLICATION WILL BE CONSIDERED.  THE COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER RENEWAL OF CIGARETTE AND LIQUOR LICENSES.  ELECTION JUDGES WILL BE APPOINTED AND THE OFFICIAL CITY POLLING PLACE WILL BE DESIGNATED.  INFORMATION WILL BE PROVIDED ON EMPLOYEE HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE.  
 
THE WINDOM E-D-A HELD A BOARD MEETING THIS WEEK.   THEY DISCUSSED A PILOT PROGRAM DESIGNED TO HELP PEOPLE START A NEW CHILD-CARE BUSINESS.  THERE WAS AN UPDATE ON THE CEMSTONE REDEVELOPMENT AREA.  A PRELIMINARY ENGINEERING STUDY HAS BEEN COMPLETED.  CEMSTONE HAS PROVIDED A LETTER OF INTENT, ALLOWING THE E-D-A TO DEVELOP A FINAL PLAT FOR THE SITE.   THE BOARD DISCUSSED THE POSSIBLE PURCHASE OF A SITE NEAR THE FORMER SHOPKO BUILDING.  A BUSINESS IS REPORTEDLY INTERESTED IN THAT LOCATION.   
 
A JUNIOR-HIGH KNOWLEDGE BOWL MEET WAS HELD MONDAY IN JACKSON.   THERE WERE 10 TEAMS REPRESENTING 5 AREA SCHOOLS.  JACKSON COUNTY CENTRAL TOOK 1ST PLACE, WITH THE MT LAKE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 2ND AND ADRIAN 3RD.  WINDOM HAD TWO TEAMS IN THE MEET.  THEY FINISHED IN 4TH PLACE AND 8TH PLACE.  THE MT LAKE PUBLIC SCHOOL HAD THREE TEAMS IN THE MEET.  THEY FINISHED IN 5TH PLACE, 7TH PLACE AND 10TH PLACE.  ANOTHER JUNIOR-HIGH KNOWLEDGE BOWL MEET WILL BE HELD AT SLAYTON ON NOVEMBER 18TH 
 
THE MT LAKE CITY COUNCIL HELD A REGULAR MEETING THIS WEEK.   THE COUNCIL APPROVED A NEW POLICY INVOLVING THE SALE OF LOTS AT THE MT LAKE CITY CEMETERY.  THE COUNCIL DISCUSSED A CRACK-SEALING PROJECT FOR THE MT LAKE TRAIL.   THE CITY ENGINEERING FIRM PRESENTED A REPORT ON THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT OF NEW WASTEWATER TREATMENT PONDS.  THE COUNCIL VOTED TO ADVERTISE THE PROJECT FOR BIDS.  THE CITY ATTORNEY HAD AN UPDATE ON THE GREENHOUSE PROPERTY.  THE COUNCIL APPROVED AN AMENDMENT TO SOME ZONING REGULATIONS.
