THE MT LAKE AREA FOOTBALL TEAM WON THE STATE 9-MAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP ON SATURDAY, DEFEATING HANCOCK 22-14 IN THE PREP BOWL. 
 
AFTER A SCORELESS 1ST QUARTER, HANCOCK SCORED TWICE IN THE SECOND QUARTER ON A TOUCHDOWN PASS AND THEN ON AN INTERCEPTION RETURN FOR A TOUCHDOWN, TAKING A 14-0 LEAD. 
 
MT LAKE AREA ANSWERED WITH A TOUCHDOWN RUN BY MACE HERRIG BUT THE 2-POINT CONVERSION FAILED, LEAVING HANCOCK AHEAD 14-6.   AFTER A DEFENSIVE STOP ON A 4TH-DOWN PLAY, MT LAKE AREA GOT THE BALL BACK AND SCORED WITH 2-SECONDS LEFT IN THE 1ST HALF ON A PASS FROM ABE STOESZ TO ADAM KARSCHNIK.  THE WOLVERINES ADDED A 2-POINT CONVERSION ON ANOTHER PASS TO KARSCHNIK, AND THE GAME WAS TIED 14-ALL AT HALFTIME. 
 
IN THE 3RD QUARTER, AFTER ANOTHER DEFENSIVE STOP, MT LAKE AREA HAD A LONG DRIVE THAT ENDED IN A TOUCHDOWN RUN BY ABE STOESZ.  STOESZ THREW A PASS TO BRETT WILLABY FOR THE 2-POINT CONVERSON, PUTTING MT LAKE AREA AHEAD 22-14. 
 
THE 4TH QUARTER SAW THE MT LAKE AREA DEFENSE STOP HANCOCK TWICE, WHILE THE WOLVERINE OFFENSE HAD TWO LONG DRIVES TO TAKE TIME OFF THE CLOCK, INCLUDING A DRIVE THAT ATE UP THE FINAL 3 MINUTES OF THE GAME, ENDING IN A KNEEL-DOWN FOR THE VICTORY.   
 
FOR THE GAME, MT LAKE AREA HAD 333 YARDS TOTAL OFFENSE, WITH 241 RUSHING AND 92 PASSING.  THE WOLVERINES DID TURN THE BALL OVER THREE TIMES AND WERE CALLED FOR 5 PENALTIES.  ABE STOESZ HAD 140 YARDS RUSHING AND MACE HERRIG RAN FOR 97 YARDS.  WILLABY WAS THE LEADING RECEIVER WITH 3 CATCHES FOR 47 YARDS.   HERRIG ADDED THREE QUARTERBACK SACKS ON DEFENSE. 
 
HANCOCK HAD A NET OF 68 YARDS RUSHING AND 87 PASSING FOR 155 YARDS TOTAL OFFENSE.  QUARTERBACK PRESTON ROHLOFF HAD ONE TOUCHDOWN PASS.  TYLER TIMMERMAN RAN FOR 89 YARDS.  THE OWLS HAD 25 YARDS IN LOSSES ON SACKS OR FUMBLES.   
 
THIS IS THE FIRST STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN MT LAKE HISTORY.  THE WOLVERINES FINISH THE SEASON WITH A 14-0 RECORD.  THE ONLY OTHER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN SCHOOL HISTORY WAS THE STATE BOYS BASKETBALL TITLE IN 1939.
