Worthington’s new movie theater- “Grand Theater” will open their doors to the public on Friday May 6th.

According to Todd Fanger, president of The Movie Guy and West Mall Theatres, Inc. “the unprecedented global pandemic threw the movie theatre business into turmoil in 2020 and 2021, and they are thrilled to have been able to partner with the City of Worthington to open one of the first new movie theatres constructed in the country during this time. Fanger went onto say they are grateful for the patience of the City and its residents as they worked to get this beautiful facility ready to show movies. The operators of the New Grand Theatre previously ran the city’s Northland Cinema 5 from 2007 to 2015 until that facility was forced to close due to the deteriorating condition of the old mall

Patrons arriving at the New Grand Theatre will be welcomed into the spacious lobby where a life-size photo mural reproduction of the original Grand Theatre in downtown Worthington pays homage to the history of moviegoing in the City. The black quartzite concession counter and colorful lighting offers traditional movie treats in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Inside, the five auditoriums at the New Grand Theatre feature luxury electric recliner seating, state-of-the-art Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection equipment, and immersive 6- and 8-channel surround sound. The two large auditoriums boast screens that are over 40’ wide, and the three other auditoriums feature screens that are nearly 30’ wide for a stunning movie experience that is unmatched in southern Minnesota. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will be played on three of its five screens. The other two screens will feature the animated family blockbuster “The Bad Guys”, and the adult drama “Father Stu” starring Mark Wahlberg. A movie hotline will be available in the future by calling (507) 343-0633. The theatre’s Facebook page is active now at https://www.facebook.com/New-Grand-Theatre-109456675090347 . Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed May 4th as “Walk and Bike to School Day” in Minnesota. Thousands of Minnesota students will take part in International Bike to School Day- TODAY, May 4th. The annual event, sponsored by Minnesota Safe Routes to School, encourages students and parents to practice safe biking and walking activities.

Walk and Bike to School Days are one-day, special events to help make biking and walking more visible, fun and rewarding for children. These events can encourage parents and students to make biking and walking to school a habit.

“We know students do better in school when they add physical activities to their day,” said Dave Cowan, MnDOT Safe Routes to School coordinator. “This event promotes safe bicycling and walking skills that students can use throughout their lives.”

These events also give local leaders an opportunity to see the value of walkable and bikeable communities.

Cowan says more than 117 Minnesota schools have registered Bike to School Day events so far. Students can also participate in Minnesota’s Bike to School Day poster contest. They can create and submit posters (on the MnSRTS Facebook page using the hashtag #mnbikes) showing how they feel when they ride a bicycle. The top three posters will win prizes.

Minnesota Safe Routes to School combines the expertise of multiple state agencies with national and local partners to provide the resources needed to support walking and biking to school. More information is available on MnDot website page. at mndot.gov/saferoutes.
