It has been a pleasure talking with City Council Member Jenny Quade. It has been fascinating hearing all about the Water Treatment Plant, Community Center, Tegels Park, The Wastewater Treatment Plant, Mayflower Park, City Street Department and Riverbend Liquor. We truly are fortunate to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable staff working within and for the City of Windom. The Council will take the second half tour of the following City Departments-  – Island Park & Pool, Public Library, Police Department, Telecom, Emergency Services Facility, Power House, the Arena, Airport and the North Windom Industrial Park sometime later this summer.

Ok so I am just perplexed as to how to even imagine the warmth of the days to come BUT today is National Heat Awareness Day it is observed annually on the last Friday of May. National Heat Awareness Day is an effort by OSHA and the National Weather Service to alert workers, employers, and the public at large about the (preventable) health dangers related to heat, in order to reduce the overall rate of illnesses and deaths caused by it. So remember even though we can’t physically feel it or even see it today, The HEAT is coming and it is SMART to learn how to prevent heat related illnesses.

And also, the Friday BEFORE Memorial Day is National Poppy Day.  Did you know…After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines.

On Sept. 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of the American Legion.

Led by the American Legion Auxiliary, each year members of the American Legion family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs; 100% of the money collected is donated to veteran’s programs in Minnesota. Don’t forget to stop down to HyVee this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to make a donation and wear your Poppy proudly in support of ALL Veterans that have fought so gallantly and have worn our Beautiful Nations uniform. In celebration of the 100-year celebration of the Windom American Legion Auxiliary on June 22nd this year, anyone making a donation will be eligible to register for a 3 X 5-foot Flag from the Auxiliary. One Flag will be awarded to a lucky winner each day.

Be Safe, Be Kind and Take a Moment to be Silent this weekend and be Grateful.

I Laura White and that’s your KDOM News.
