The first HyLife HyFive Community Race for Riverfest 2022 was a true success. There were 268 participants. According to Stacey Ashley, Public Relations and Communications Manager at HyLife Foods, they set out with a simple vision- to show their appreciation to Windom and offer a community event that prompted their values and encouraged wellness. Ashley went onto say, HyLife is thankful to everyone- their sponsors and partners – HyVee, Lake Crystal Coaches, Gartner Refrigeration, the team at Windom Area Health, The Chamber, Windom’s local first responders- Fire, Police, Ambulance, and Mayor Jones for getting up early and officially starting the race. Ashley also stated she can’t forget HyLife’s dedicated employees for volunteering their time and the amazing runners who came out and supported a great cause. All monies raised by the race will be donated back to the Community of Windom by improving Windom Area Health’s Public Be Well Path. There was a great variety of ages represented in the race. The Youngest participants were 10 years old- Evan Kish and Brandon Javier Montesinos and the oldest participant was 75 year old Clinton Firstbrook III.

According to Ashley, there were 5 divisions in each men and women categories.

Winners in the

18 and Under were: Aaden Nauman and Sophia Nelson

19-35 year olds were: Olaf Estrella and Christianna Green

36-49 year olds were: Brent Anderson and Kylie Nelson

50-59 year olds were: Eric Gendreau and Karen Keffeler

60 years and Up were: Jany Grandprey and a tie for the women Juane Elston and Kim Glidden

Ashley stated that they are so pleased with the outcome for this first time event and they will explore possibilities for future races.

Riverfest’s 1st Annual Rubber Duck Race was exciting and profitable all the way around! According to Windom Area Chamber Director Tyann Hall-Marcy roughly $5,000 was made for next year’s Riverfest!  It was an exciting event to watch as ALL the ducks were dumped off the bridge and made their way down the Des Moines River…. The LUCKY DUCK winners were.

1st Place won 10% of ticket sales which was $1,159 to Mary Lee Raverty

2nd Place received 7.5% of ticket sales which was $869.25 to Amanda Mattson

And LAST BUT not LEAST the LAST DUCK Captured got 7.5% of ticket sales which went to Owen Altman.

Windom Police Department reported on June 13th a 16-year-old driver from Windom was driving a 1999 GMC Sierra heading SouthBound on 4th Ave in Island Park and was looking at the pool and went off the road to the right and sideswiped a light pole. Moderate damage was done to the car, but the top of the pole fell off and smashed causing over $1,000 in damage for the light pole. No injuries were reported. On June 12th Windom Officers received a report at approximately 8:30pm of a stolen vehicle. A 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix was taken from the drivers workplace at Dollar General when she was at work. The vehicle was unlocked and keys were inside of the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle had lent the car to her friend and she was the only person that had permission to drive the vehicle. At 10:39 that same evening the vehicle was located at MSP Airport unoccupied.

On the 11th of June at approximately 7:45pm Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Prospect Ave for a disturbance. Officers arrived on scene and separated the people who were still yelling at each other. After investigation, charges are pending on a 57-year-old Windom Male for Disruptive Intoxication and 5th Degree Assault.

Also on the 11th at approximately 11pm an officer was assisting patrol and observed a vehicle with no headlights or taillights on. After a traffic stop on 7th Street near Highway 60, the Windom Officer spoke with the three occupants. The officer could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. The Officer found a baggie with green leafy substance, cigars and a vape device in the glove box. A 17-year-old male party confessed to the items belonging to him and the parent was contacted of the situation. A warning was issued for the violations to the 17-year-old male from Worthington.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites Minnesotans interested in fishing, wildlife and outdoor skills to tune into upcoming webinars that will discuss aquatic invasive species and foraging wild edibles along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

The first webinar on aquatic invasive species will be at noon Wednesday, June 15. Join April Rust, aquatic invasive species training coordinator, to learn about the challenges presented by invasive species, why it’s important to prevent their spread and ways to help protect Minnesota waters.
