Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office released the following Press Release: On Monday, June 20th at approximately 9:45 am Cottonwood County Dispatch received a report of an injury accident involving a vehicle that had struck an ATV. The accident was located at the intersection of Cottonwood County Road and 290th Street in Westbrook Township. First Responders were paged to the scene. Upon investigation it was determined that a 1996 Buick Regal that was being driven by a 43-year-old Lee Schmalz from rural Westbrook was traveling southbound on County Road 6. A 2011 Arctic Cat ATV that was being driven by 62-year-old Kent Erickson of rural Storden was westbound on 290th Street. Both vehicles entered the intersection and the ATV driven by Erickson was struck by the Buick. Both vehicles entered the west ditch where they came to rest. Erickson was pronounced dead at the scene. Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Westbrook Ambulance.

Windom Police Department reported On or about June 17, 2022, in Windom, a 63-year old male suspect from Sherburn, formerly of Windom, being a person who is required to register as a predatory offender, knowingly failed to give written notice of the address of a new primary residence to assigned correction agent or to law enforcement in the jurisdiction in which the person was currently registered.  Charges pending on the 63-year-old male from Sherburn for Predatory Offender-knowingly commits act or fails to fulfill registration requirement, a Felony.

On the 21st at approximately 11am Windom Police handled an accident in the 800 block of Des Moines Drive. The driver of a 2017 Ford Fusion stated she was reaching to the passenger side of the vehicle when she collided with a trash can owned by Hometown Sanitation. Light damage to the vehicle and no injuries reported.

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners will hold a special work session meeting TODAY at 9am in the Jackson County Courthouse County Board Room located at 405 Fourth Street for the purpose of reviewing & discussing uses for Jackson County’s Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF) provided through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Windom City Council met on Tuesday this week. A proclamation was presented to Dawn Aamot- Retiring Librarian. Dawn has worked with the library since December 7th 1987.  Her last day will be June 25th. The 2021 City Audit was presented by Schlenner Wenner & Co. The City had a “unmodified opinion” which means a clean audit. The TIP 1-22 Development Agreement for the Windom Apartments LLC, located at 1925 N Redding Avenue, the former Windom EDA Spec building location was sold and will be developed soon, into 60 hosting units consisting of 6 buildings with 10 units each and 2 parking spots per unit. The plan is for half to be built in 2022 and the other half in 2023. This project will have an estimated taxable market value of 7.4 million. It is agreed to be market rate housing for 25 years. Approved $983,316 TIF incentive request.

The Council approved the hiring for Library Director, Kari Hanson, she will begin t on or before July 11, 2022. The Council continued their discussion on the EDA / Assistant City Administrator position and a job description was reviewed. It was approved to advertised both for the single position of EDA Director and a joint position of EDA / Asst. City Administrator. The Council is open to hiring the right person to either just an EDA Administrator or for the combined position with Assistant City Administrator.  The second half of City Facilities Tours will be on June 29, 2022 starting at 5 PM.

There will be a retirement send off for Dawn Aamot, Retiring Librarian for the Windom Public Library. Dawn has been with the library for 34 ½ years. A come and go farewell will be held during regular library hours Today and Tomorrow June 24th from 9am-5pm. Refreshments will be served both days by the Friends of the Windom Library. The Community is encouraged to stop by and wish Dawn a happy retirement and give thanks to her for all of her years of service.
