TODAY is National Teddy Bear Day! I have or should say I had two very treasured Teddy Bears. One was my Dad’s that was given to him back in 1933 and then to me when I turned 21. It had my Granddad’s glasses perched on his head. I always kept him safe on a shelf so nothing could harm it. On my grandson’s 3rd Birthday, I gifted him this bear for good luck and safe keeping. He handles it with such care and love. I know I made the right choice. I kept the eyeglasses and put them on MY Teddy Bear that was given to me by my Granddad when I was five. Oh, my goodness I LOVE this bear. Truth be told, I STILL at times take him down and hug him because it just gives such a feeling of love and comfort. My bear is now over 50 years old, and he dons the eye glasses of my grandfather who sits and watches over me. Some day I’ll build the courage to pass him onto my granddaughter but for now I think I’ll just keep him. After all, she has her Daddy’s teddy bear that kept him safe and comforted for the past 33 years. How awesome is it that the Teddy Bear was “invented” over a cartoon by Clifford Berryman that was riddling then President Teddy Roosevelt for refusing to shoot a bear cub while hunting in Mississippi back in 1902. The Berryman cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt and the cub inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom who created the new toy, which by the way, President Roosevelt gave permission to name “Teddy Bear”.  To quote Pam Brown “A teddy bear does not depend on mechanics to give him the semblance of life. He is loved- and therefore, he lives.”
